How does laser dentistry work?

Dental Lasers emit quick pulses of light energy to a treatment area. Various wavelengths of light are used depending on the type of tissue being treated.

What types of lasers does SmileOn Dentistry have?

Marina Del Rey Laser Dentist Dr. Scott Tamura has three types of lasers in his dental office:

  • DIAGNOdent Laser Cavity Detection

  • Waterlase MD – YSGG hard and soft tissue laser

  • EZlase Diode Laser

How does SmileOn Dentistry use different types of lasers?

(1) DIAGNOdent Laser Cavity Detection

The DIAGNOdent is a 620 nm laser that allows SmileOn Dentistry to detect tooth decay earlier, so we can preserve more of your natural tooth structure and prevent tooth pain, sensitivity and other more severe dental problems that accompany cavities. Detecting cavities earlier also minimizes the aesthetic impact of decay and the expense of more complicated treatment, helping you to better care for your smile.

(2) Waterlase MD

If you consider yourself somewhat of an anxious dental patient and are seeking extreme safety and comfort, you need to ask SmileOn Dentistry if having your dentistry done using the Waterlase MD is right for you. Not all types of dental problems can be treated using the Waterlase MD, but for those types of treatments that can be performed using this high tech laser, you can expect less pain, less cost and faster treatment times.

Laser dentistry using the Waterlase MD can be a precise and effective way to perform many dental procedures. The potential for laser dentistry to improve dental procedures rests in SmileOn Dentistry’s ability to control power output and the duration of exposure of laser energy to the tissue (whether gum or tooth structure), allowing for treatment of a highly specific area of focus, without damaging surrounding tissues.

(3) EZlase Diode Laser

The EZlase Diode Laser is used to treat periodontal (gum) Disease, Cancer Sores, and to Sculpt your Gums to improve the appearance of your smile. Because it has multiple settings, it can be used during your routine periodontal maintenance visits (cleanings) to disinfect your mouth below the gum line where your toothbrush can not clean. It can also be used at very low and safe power.
